Ram Board vs. Budget Floor Protection: What the Quote Never Tells You
I manage purchasing for a 140-person commercial interiors company. Every year I sign off on roughly $180,000 in site supplies, including temporary floor protection. I don't have a favorite product. I have a process. When a project manager asks, 'Can't we just use the cheaper rolls?' I walk them through the same comparison.
We are comparing two ways to keep finished floors alive during renovation: ram-board floor protection and the lightweight contractor's paper that often appears in lower quotes. The difference isn't simply 'you get what you pay for.' Sometimes the cheaper paper is the right call. More often, the real cost hides until after the floor gets scratched.
The question everyone asks is 'what's the price per roll?' The question worth asking is 'what does one usable square foot cost after freight, tape, labor, waste, and a possible floor repair?'
The first thing I clear up about ram-board
If your search history includes 'single board computer 16GB RAM' or 'single board computer 32GB RAM,' the name ram-board can look like a hardware term. It isn't. In construction, ram-board is a heavy rolled surface protection membrane. It is not random access memory and it is not a rigid board. It is a dense material that goes on top of finished floors so a job site does not turn a beautiful floor into a punch-list item.
The comparison here is not about memory capacity or processor speed. It is about material durability against site reality.
1. Upfront price vs. total installed cost
In spring 2024, we bid out a 30,000-square-foot office renovation. One supplier quoted contractor's paper at around 35% less than ram-board. I want to say it was closer to 38% less, but I don't have that quote in front of me, so don't treat the exact number as gospel.
The purchasing committee liked that lower number. Then we planned the actual installation. The paper needed extra seam tape, an extra layer in hallways, and more labor to prep the concrete. By the time freight and installation labor were added, the cheap paper was only marginally cheaper, and the risk of damage was still higher.
Here is the simple calculation I run now. Take the material quote, add freight, seam tape, disposal, and the labor needed to clean the floor before and after. Then divide by the square feet actually covered. If the cheaper roll needs a second layer in busy areas, include that too. When I do this for multi-day projects, ram-board often lands within a few cents of the cheap option before the first cart rolls across.
2. Puncture and point loads
Contractor's paper can feel dense in the warehouse. I have squeezed a roll and thought, 'this will probably work.' But a job site does not respect paper. A screw from a tool bag, the corner of a ladder, or a rolling chair leg can poke through a lightweight sheet in seconds.
Ram-board is thicker and denser than most contractor's paper. It spreads point loads over a wider area, so a dropped tool is less likely to create a small puncture that turns into a scratch when someone drags equipment over it. It is not a force field. No temporary protection can promise zero floor damage. But on a live site, we replace far fewer sections of ram-board than we used to replace torn sections of cheap paper.
I saw this clearly in a model unit before client handover. Someone dropped a wine glass onto a polished concrete floor. The glass shards left a scratch pattern that went straight through the lightweight paper seam. It was a small mark, but in the right light it felt like a mile. A more substantial protection layer absorbed the impact in a way that thin paper simply couldn't.
3. Installation and removal
Install crews notice the difference quickly. The lightweight paper moves when it is taped down. It wrinkles on uneven floors, and wrinkles become trip hazards or channels for dust. Ram-board is easier to position because it has enough body to stay where you put it.
Taping is still required. I don't want to oversell any product. But the seam behavior is different. We don't have to stop every few feet to smooth out bubbles or reattach torn edges.
Removal is where I used to overlook cost. After our trial in a stairwell—it was closer to 1,500 square feet than the 2,000 I estimated at first—the cheap paper left adhesive residue and torn strips. Our crew spent an extra half-day cleaning. That cleanup is part of the true price.
4. Supplier transparency
This is the dimension that surprised me. The material was not the only difference. The quotes were different too.
The vendor who quoted ram-board sent a line-item breakdown before I asked: material, freight, estimated tax, and any disposal or handling charge. When a change happened, they told us before they invoiced. The cheaper paper supplier quoted only the material price, then added a 'handling fee' and a 'split-ship charge' after the purchase order. Finance rejected the first invoice, and I spent two hours on the phone untangling it.
Real talk: I have learned to ask 'what's not included?' before I ask 'what's the price?' A supplier who shows all fees upfront may look more expensive on the first page. Usually that supplier ends up cheaper by the final invoice.
Match the protection to the floor finish
Part of commercial buying is deciding where to spend the money. Cheap paper on a carpeted employee break room may be fine because a small tear there is not visible. On hardwood, polished concrete, or a dark stone tile, I will spend more because a single scratch in a main corridor is magnified during the client walk.
I use a simple checklist: how long will the protection be down, how much equipment will roll over it, and how difficult is it to repair the floor below. If any answer is 'more than one day,' 'anything with wheels,' or 'expensive,' the cheaper material drops off the list.
When budget protection is still acceptable
I am not trying to make ram-board sound like the only possible answer. There are situations where cheap paper is fine. If you are protecting a lobby for a furniture move and no one will drag unpadded equipment across it, lightweight material will probably do.
But for multi-day construction, active traffic, and floors that have to look perfect at a final walkthrough, I specify ram-board. Not because the brand is famous. Because the quote is transparent and the material handles the job better.
What I buy now
I still keep a few rolls of budget protection on the shelf for small jobs. For anything that involves real construction traffic, I order ram-board.
The upfront cost can be higher. The total cost, including labor and repair risk, is usually lower. That's the comparison that matters. Period.
