Ram Board vs. Plywood vs. Cardboard: A Cost Controller’s Side-by-Side Comparison
Every time a project manager asks me about temporary floor protection, the conversation starts the same way: “Why should we pay for Ram Board when plywood and cardboard are cheaper?” It’s a fair question. I’ve spent six years managing purchasing for a commercial flooring contractor, and my job is to look at total cost, not sticker price.
This is a direct comparison between purpose-built surface protection boards—the ram-board category is the standard I use—and the usual improvised route: plywood, cardboard, or thin plastic sheeting. Plywood is strong, but it is not a surface protector. It can have splinters, warped edges, and exposed nail heads. If you slide a sheet instead of lifting it, it can scratch the finish underneath. Cardboard absorbs moisture and can bond to fresh paint or adhesive. Poly film slides and becomes a trip hazard.
I’m not saying improvised protection is always wrong. It has a place on rough, unoccupied surfaces. But when you put a “temporary” product over an expensive finished floor, you are betting the repair cost against the material savings.
On that note, use the right product for the task. Sprayway glass cleaner is a glass cleaner, not an adhesive remover. It will not fix the mess from a failed protective layer. That’s a small example of a bigger buying principle: know the boundary of every product you specify.
Verdict: Risk-weighted cost favors a board designed for the job. One failed project can erase years of “savings” from cheap materials.
4. Don’t over-buy: right-size the protection
Here’s a counterintuitive conclusion: buying more protection than you need is also a mistake. I once reviewed a request for a single board computer with 32GB RAM for a simple job-site logging system. The engineer wanted headroom. After we measured the actual data rate, a single board computer with 8GB RAM did everything we needed at half the hardware cost and lower power draw. Same logic applies to floor protection.
For heavy demolition or abrasive grinding, a fiberboard product like Ram Board is not my first choice. That’s not an insult; it’s a boundary. I would rather send the crew to a specialist who handles those conditions than pretend a general product can do everything.

- Install labor (hours × burdened rate)

- Tape, adhesive, and consumables
- Repair risk (probability × average repair cost)

If you compare only the first line, you are making a decision with maybe one-third of the information.
So: Ram Board or the cheap route?
Use the cheap route if:
- You have one light-traffic day and the floor finish doesn’t matter.
- You already own the plywood and labor is free.
- You are covering a floor you plan to replace anyway.
Use Ram Board or a similar purpose-built board if:
- You are protecting a finished floor you will have to fix if damaged.
- You need fast installation and clean removal.
- You are comparing total cost, not sticker price.
And before you believe any claim that one product is perfect for every situation, ask your supplier what the product is not for. The best vendors I’ve worked with—including the one that distributes Ram Board—are honest about their limits. That honesty is worth more than any product spec.
This worked for us, but we are a commercial contractor with predictable schedules. If you are a residential painter doing one room, the calculus might be different. And this pricing was accurate as of Q4 2024. Verify current quotes before you budget.
The cheapest temporary floor protection is not the one with the lowest price per square foot. It is the one with the lowest total cost per successful project. That’s the comparison that matters.
