Ram-Board vs. Cheap Plastic Floor Protection: A Procurement Manager's Comparison

I am not a flooring contractor. I am the person who signs the purchase orders. For the past six years, I have managed site-protection buying for a 38-person commercial construction company. That includes every roll of ram-board, every box of tape, and every temporary solution that ended up becoming a headache.

I am also not going to tell you that ram-board will prevent every scratch, dent, or drop. It won't. No floor protection product can promise that. What it can do is reduce the odds of expensive damage. That is a more honest sales pitch.

This article is a comparison I have run at least 20 times: ram-board-style temporary floor protection versus cheap plastic sheeting. It is not a product review. It is a procurement breakdown, based on actual orders in our cost tracking system.

Why a Straight Price Comparison Misses the Point

At first glance, plastic sheeting wins. A roll of 2-mil poly film costs less per square foot than a roll of heavy-duty ram-board. If you only compare ticket price, the math looks simple. But ticket price is not the cost of protecting a floor.

When I audited our 2023 project spending, I found that 14% of our unforeseen site costs came from floor damage after cheap protection failed. That number changed how we buy. It also changed the way I talk to site crews: I do not ask what's the cheapest covering? I ask what happens if this covering fails?

That question drives the three dimensions I use in every comparison: cost per project, installation labor, and failure cost.

Dimension 1: Cost Per Project, Not Cost Per Square Foot

For a 2,000-square-foot finished hardwood floor, here is a real comparison from a job we bid in Q4 2024. Plastic film quotes came in around $0.04 per square foot. The ram-board-style board was about $0.14 per square foot. So the raw material cost was $80 versus $280. Most people stop there and buy the plastic.

But our crews needed to tape every seam of the plastic, and they still came back to re-tape sections after foot traffic pulled them up. We allocated double the plastic for that job, so the real material cost was $160, not $80. The ram-board went down once and stayed down. The total material cost was $280. The gap closed from $200 to $120.

There is also the difference between list price and landed cost. Some suppliers quote a low roll price, then add a handling fee or a freight surcharge for heavy shipments. That is not an accusation of hidden pricing. It is a reminder to compare total delivered cost, not the first number on the quote.

So the material gap still exists. But it is smaller than it looks, and it ignores labor, which is the second dimension.

Dimension 2: Installation Speed and Labor

On a 2,500-square-foot multifamily corridor, we ran a time test. Two laborers installed ram-board-style protection in about one hour and forty minutes. The same crew needed nearly three and a half hours to lay plastic film, tape the seams, and go back over the high-traffic areas.

Our fully loaded labor rate is around $65 per hour. The plastic installation cost us about $220 more in labor. Add that to the material gap, and the cheap option was no longer cheap. On that corridor, the ram-board came out ahead by roughly $100 before we even talked about failures.

I have watched this pattern play out enough times to trust it. When a project manager says plastic is cheaper, I ask them to include the labor. Almost every time, the price gap shrinks or disappears.

Dimension 3: The Failure Cost You Don't Budget For

This is the dimension that changed my mind permanently. The downside of plastic film is not the tear. It is what gets damaged when the tear happens.

A few years ago, we protected a condominium corridor with cheap plastic. A cabinet installer dropped a drill. The drill punched through the film and scratched a newly sanded oak floor. The upside of choosing plastic was saving about $400 on that part of the project. The risk was an $1,800 refinish, plus a client who was already nervous about construction noise. I kept asking myself: is $400 worth potentially losing the client? The answer was no.

We also had a job where a glass storefront got chipped by a rolling cart. That became a service call to a local glass repair company, around $350 for a single pane. The floor protection wasn't designed to stop every impact, but a heavier board absorbs more of those small hits than a thin film ever will.

What most people don't realize is that temporary protection is not really a product category. It is a risk decision. You are deciding how much damage you are willing to absorb in exchange for a lower material price.

Dimension 4: Reusability and Waste

Cheap plastic film is almost always single-use. It rips, collects dust, and goes into the dumpster. Ram-board-style boards can sometimes be pulled up, cleaned, and used on a lower-risk job, depending on how beat-up they are. That doesn't always work, but it happens enough to matter on a year-end budget.

The green angle also needs scrutiny. Per the FTC Green Guides (ftc.gov), environmental claims like recyclable have to be substantiated. We had one vendor call their plastic sheeting recyclable, but our local recycling facility did not accept it. That didn't change our safety requirements, but it did change how much trust we put in their marketing claims.

I am not going to pretend every ram-board order is recyclable or reused. But the waste difference is part of the total cost if you track disposal and hauling.

When the Cheap Option Still Makes Sense

I don't want this to sound like a ram-board commercial. There are situations where thin plastic is the right call.

If you are protecting a concrete subfloor for a one-day walk-through, plastic film is fine. If you are trying to keep dust off carpet in an empty office while a painter does touch-up, a lightweight sheet will work. Our company still buys plastic for those cases. Buying the heavy board for every scenario would be overbuying, and overbuying is also a cost problem.

I also pay attention to what the supplier recommends. The vendor who says you don't need the heavy board for a low-risk job earns trust for the next high-risk job. The one who pushes the premium product every time starts to sound like a rep, not a partner.

This worked for us because we are a mid-size commercial GC with a dedicated site crew and predictable project types. If you are a one-person handyman service doing small residential repairs, the same math might not apply. Your mileage may vary.

Bottom Line: Choose Based on Your Failure Risk

So which one should you buy? Stop asking ram-board or plastic? and ask what am I protecting and what is the cost of failure?

If you are protecting a finished floor that would be expensive to repair, buy the heavier board. The material price difference is small compared with a refinish, a glass replacement, or a lost client. If you are protecting a surface that can handle a few scratches, use the cheap film and don't feel guilty about it.

I'd rather work with a supplier who tells me when I don't need the premium product. That kind of honesty is how a vendor earns trust. That's the same standard I try to hold in our own procurement decisions.

The exact prices I quoted are from Q4 2024. Material costs change fast, so verify current quotes before you set a budget. But the framework doesn't change: cost per project, labor, and failure cost. That is what will save you money.
