Ram-Board: Why Cheap Floor Protection Is Never Actually Cheap

Not every protection failure starts on the job site. In 2023, the canister purge valve on our service truck failed. A $180 part. But the truck went down, the material delivery was delayed, and the crew had two choices: wait, or work with whatever was on hand. They worked. They skipped floor protection on an upper landing because the protection material was on the truck that wasn't coming. A rolling scaffold scuffed the hardwood. Repair bill: $1,400.

If a supplier calls their board "heavy-duty" or "recyclable," ask for the test data. A credible vendor will have it.

And one more buyer's tip: ask the supplier what their product is NOT for. The answer tells you more than the sales pitch.

Bottom Line

Here's what I want every project manager to understand: there's a difference between price and cost. I can look up how much it costs to file with H&R Block in-person in about two minutes. But I can't tell you how much a "cheap" floor protection decision costs until months later, when the damage shows up. That's the problem—the true cost isn't on the invoice.

Cheap floor protection is a gamble. Sometimes it works. When it doesn't, it costs thousands more than the savings you got from buying it.

Ask yourself why you're choosing the protection you're choosing. Is it because it's cheap, or because it's right for the job?

That question changed how I spend about $15,000 a year. It's the reason I haven't had to explain damaged hardwood to a client in over a year.

At least, that's been my experience. And honestly? That experience is worth more than any discount.
