Ram-Board Floor Protection: Buy the Job, Not the Board
If you're buying temporary floor protection by unit price, you're probably overpaying. A cheap roll of film can end up costing two to four times more than a heavy-duty ram-board by the time labor, tape, adhesive residue, removal, and callbacks land on the invoice. I do not mean every budget product is bad—I mean the unit price alone won't tell you which one is worth it. I learned this the expensive way: roughly $26,000 in documented mistakes since 2017.

One more trap: treating protection as a work surface
Ram-board is not a structural sheet. It won't survive dropped scaffolds or sustained point loads, and it's not designed to absorb impact from heavy tools. It's a surface protection product. That's its job. If the floor needs structural protection, that's a different material entirely.
Where any floor protection reaches its limit
Being honest: no board fixes a bad substrate. In Q1 2024, I ignored the moisture meter because the floor looked dry. We covered a microcement floor two days after installation, trapped moisture under the protection, and created a blotchy disaster. $1,200 repair that had nothing to do with the product itself. If that labor is cheap, cardboard can still win. It's an option, not a religion.
The payoff
There's something satisfying about demo day when the protection comes up in one piece and the floor underneath looks exactly the way it did when the GC finished. After 18 months of using this checklist, we've caught 47 potential errors before they hit the job site. Some were material spec mix-ups. Some were tape failures. Some were as simple as "we forgot to tell the flooring crew to wait before walking across the board." Simple, but expensive if you miss it.
