Ram-Board vs. Cardboard & Plastic Sheeting: A Cost Controller's Comparison of Jobsite Floor Protection

Tile work tells the same story. Installing Schluter trim—the aluminum and brass edge profiles that give tile a clean finish—happens right after tile cutting. Cut profile pieces have sharp, burred edges. Saw water drips. A dropped tile corner, even from knee height, chips porcelain and dents engineered hardwood. Plastic sheeting does nothing to stop that. Cardboard absorbs the water and then transfers a damp stain to the floor. Rigid boards deflect the impact and shed the water.
Here's the counterintuitive finding: cheap protection doesn't just fail to prevent damage, it can cause it. Plastic traps moisture against hardwood and causes cupping in 48 hours. Wet cardboard bleeds dye into porous stone. Tape residue bonds to fresh paint and leaves marks worse than the dust it was hiding.
Think about it like a screen protector. Nobody hands over a $400 phone with a piece of newspaper taped to the front, yet contractors happily put $30,000 of hardwood floors behind $60 of cardboard and call it a budget decision. The floor is the largest continuous surface in the project—the first thing the client touches and one of the most expensive to repair after move-in.
When the Budget Option Is Actually the Right Call
I'm not anti-cardboard. We buy it every week. But we use it where it works, not where it's convenient.
- Cardboard is right for one-day touch-ups, low-foot-traffic areas, and the kind of project where the floor is already cosmetically worn. Cost: almost nothing. Performance: acceptable for that scope.
- Plastic sheeting is right for covering furniture, wrapping materials, and blocking paint overspray. Just don't walk on it.
- Ram-board is right for live-in renovations, high-foot-traffic zones, multiple trades, tile or stone work, water exposure, hardwood or natural stone, and any job lasting more than a couple of days.
Here's the same advice as a quick scenario guide:
- One-day cabinet touch-up with no floor traffic? Cardboard is fine.
- Weekend paint job over carpet? Plastic and drop cloths do the job.
- Two-week renovation with tile work, new trim, and hardwood already installed? Ram-board.
- 60-day commercial build-out with constant trades and wheeled carts? Heavy-duty protection boards—plus plywood over the main traffic lanes.
The Bottom Line: Match the Spec to the Job
Here's an analogy I use when people ask why we spend “extra” on floor protection. When you spec a single board computer for a project—say, one with 16GB RAM that has to handle several workloads—you don't buy the 8GB RAM version purely because it's cheaper. You match the spec to the workload. Floor protection is the same. The 8GB mindset asks, “What's the cheapest option that won't embarrass me?” The 16GB mindset asks, “What happens if the floor gets damaged, and what prevents that from happening?” One saves you 20% on materials. The other saves you thousands on punch list rework.
I have mixed feelings about recommending a pricier protection material, because I've been the one defending the line item in front of a client. But this isn't a premium upgrade. It's risk management with a unit price attached.
What you pay for materials is a cost. What you pay for damage is a liability. Treat them differently.
