Ram-Board vs. Cheaper Protection: 3 Scenarios for Choosing Temporary Floor Protection
Ask three contractors how they protect floors during a renovation and you'll get three different answers: ram-board, plastic sheeting, old carpet, flattened moving boxes. I've used almost all of them. Some of those choices were right for the job. A few weren't.
Here's the frank answer: there's no single “best” temporary floor protection. But most projects fit into one of three scenarios. Once you know which one you're in, the decision gets practical.
A quick note on why I have an opinion here. I'm the quality and brand compliance manager at a regional renovation company. I review every completed project before it reaches the client walkthrough—roughly 130 jobs each year. In our Q1 2024 quality audit, floor damage was the second most common punch-list issue we caught before handover. We tightened our floor protection rules, and by Q4 floor-related callbacks had dropped by more than half.
Start by figuring out which scenario you're in
Floor protection is not a single product decision. It's a risk decision. Here's how I frame it for our project managers:
- Scenario 1: The floor stays, and the client will see it. Touch-up painting, cabinet hardware, final-stage work, window glass replacement in a finished room. The work may be light, but the floor is part of how the client judges the whole job.
- Scenario 2: The floor stays, but heavy work happens near it. Hallways and rooms that have to survive a full renovation, demolition, tiling, material hauling, or crews working above and around a finished surface.
- Scenario 3: The floor is already scheduled to go. It will be torn out, replaced, or refinished soon. The floor you're standing on isn't the finished product.
You can have more than one scenario in the same house. In a second-floor gut renovation, the hallway might be Scenario 2, the active demolition room might be Scenario 3, and the stair landing leading to the finished entry might be Scenario 1. Treat each area separately.
Scenario 1: Visible floor, light-to-medium work
This is the scenario where I've made my most embarrassing mistakes. I remember one Saturday job: replacing a single cracked window pane in a marble foyer. The work itself was maybe twenty minutes. I told the crew the floor didn't need ram-board because, “what are the odds?” Well, the odds caught up with us. The old pane broke on removal, and a shard landed on the marble—right in the path where someone stepped on it. That scratch turned into an expensive repair and a very awkward client conversation.
In finished spaces, even small tasks deserve hard, walkable protection. A glass cutter, a screwdriver, a hinge that slips out of a hand—none of it sounds dangerous until it hits a floor that's supposed to look new.
What I'd use: a proper heavy-duty board like ram-board, not thin plastic sheeting. Tape the seams with tape specifically rated for the product, and extend the coverage at least four or five feet beyond the actual work zone. That last part feels wasteful, but bounced and dragged items don't respect the tiny area you're working in. Also, sweep and wipe the floor before laying the board down—grit trapped underneath can scratch just like a dropped tool can.
Cutting ram-board to fit is easy: score it with a sharp utility knife, then snap it along the score. Don't try to snip it around odd shapes freehand; if you're protecting around a window casing or door trim, use a paper template first. Think of each straight edge as a chance for a tighter seam and less debris getting underneath.
One thing worth saying about cost: in a high-visibility scenario, the protection budget is tiny relative to the perception cost of a damaged floor. When the client stops by and sees ram-board down, they don't think you're wasting money. They think you're careful. That impression carries real value.
Scenario 2: A finished floor in the path of heavy work
This is the area where protection does the hardest physical work. Imagine a long, newly finished oak hallway that connects a gutted kitchen to the only exit. Every day, crews carry lumber, tile, adhesive buckets, and a rolling cart loaded with tools over that floor. If you don't protect it, you're not gambling with a scratch—you're gambling with the entire job's punch list.
For this scenario, we use full-size heavy-duty boards and overlap the seams by an inch or two, like shingles, so debris slides over rather than catching. I know ram-board has a slightly higher upfront cost than a roll of poly sheeting. In my experience, the cost difference is less than one callback or claim. And there's a time benefit people don't expect: crews can stage materials on a solid, flat surface, which means fewer trips and less careful carrying.
I can only speak to interior renovations, by the way. If you're doing new construction, the calculation is different because you don't yet have a finished floor to protect. On a remodel, though, a floor that's going to be in the final product deserves this treatment.
Here's the part most installers skip: checking the protection during the job. After a few days, boards get gouged, tape lifts, and grit works its way under the edges. We do a quick walk every morning in heavy-traffic zones. If a section feels springy or looks worn, we replace it before it becomes floor damage. It takes two minutes and it prevents the exact problem the board is there to solve.
I don't have hard data on how many claims this has prevented since we made it standard. What I can say from experience is that every serious floor-damage claim I've reviewed in the last four years happened on a job where someone had “simplified” the protection plan.
Scenario 3: The floor has a demolition date
Here's where I'll probably annoy a floor protection salesperson: don't spend money protecting a floor that's about to be ripped out. If the client already chose new tile and the old floor is scheduled for demo, laying premium surface protection over that old tile is waste. It doesn't make the job safer and it doesn't improve the final product.
That doesn't mean you go bare. You need a safe walking path for the crew, and you need to protect what the doomed floor touches—thresholds, door casings, the finished floor just outside the room. But inside the demolition zone, basic coverage is enough. I've had clients ask us to “be careful with that old floor” while also planning to replace it. In that case, the right conversation is to clarify: the old floor isn't part of the final scope, so the money belongs in the new floor or in protecting the path to it.
This is also the scenario where the cheapest adequate option is the right option. A contractor who recommends premium protection everywhere—even where it doesn't matter—isn't acting like a consultant. That trust matters more than selling an extra roll.
How to decide: a quick check
If you're not sure which scenario you're in, run through this:
- Will this exact floor be part of the finished job? No → it's Scenario 3. Protect transitions and paths, keep it simple.
- If yes: is heavy work or constant traffic happening directly over it? Yes → Scenario 2. Full coverage, heavy-duty boards, overlapping seams, daily checks.
- If the work above it is light but the client is around—or will judge the space before it's officially done → treat it as Scenario 1. Board it even if the task seems too small to matter.
And if owners are living in the home while work happens, move one tier up. A buyer or homeowner walking through sees the site with different eyes than a tradesperson does. What seems like harmless dust to a crew can feel like chaos to a client. Visible, tidy floor protection is one of the few quality signals they can actually read.
Bottom line: protection is part of the deliverable
I don't think of ram-board or any temporary floor protection as an expense. I think of it as quality control. The floor is one of the largest surfaces a client sees on the final walkthrough. If it's clean and undamaged, it says the rest of the job was handled with the same care. If it's scratched, no matter how good the drywall work is, that scratch is what they'll remember.
There's something genuinely satisfying about pulling up the last run of protection after a rough project and seeing the floor still look like the day-one photo. After weeks of dust, dropped tools and heavy carts, that moment is the payoff.
So don't ask “what's the best floor protection?” Ask what scenario you're in. The right material, used where it matters, is always the cheapest one.
