  • Go with boards when: frequent heavy tool handling, liquid exposure, multi-day duration, finished hardwood or polished stone beneath, or no one available to monitor the surface.
  • Go mid-grade (thin board or heavy cardboard) when: small repair job, half-day duration, few people on site, no liquid risk.
  • Go film/cardboard when: dry foot-traffic only, or genuinely no budget for anything heavier and the risk profile is minimal.

Here's what I actually want you to take from this: if a cheap option fully covers your project's protection needs, it's not cheap — it's the right value fit. The mistake isn't choosing cheap. The mistake is choosing cheap without pricing in what its failure would cost you. That's the whole comparison. Not "boards are better," but "boards cost more upfront and less overall once you count what a single mistake would run."
