Ram-Board Isn't a Universal Answer: How to Choose Floor Protection by Scenario
There's no one floor protection product that fits every job. If you're in a half-finished building, you can drop paint and drag lumber all day. If you're protecting a new floor in an occupied office, the same approach is a mistake.

Cardboard has its place in a move or a light renovation. I wouldn't choose it where paint and water are involved, because once it gets wet, it stops being a flat surface. A purpose-made film or runner is a better fit. That's not a knock on cardboard; it's just knowing the limit of the material.
Most paint repair guides will tell you the same thing: the fix starts with a clean surface. But no one tells you to protect the floor before you start scraping. If I searched 'how to repair chipped paint' right now, I'd find a hundred videos about spackling and sanding. About five of them would show floor protection. That's a gap.
How to know which scenario you're in
Here's how I make the call. Ask three questions:
- How much weight will hit the floor? Carts and ladders mean heavy board. A paintbrush doesn't.

- What's the floor material? Wood and polished concrete are unforgiving. Carpet is more forgiving, but still needs something down to absorb spills.
If you're still unsure, start with the thinnest board that won't tear, and tape it down. Tape matters more than thickness. A floating board is a fall hazard. A board with all four edges taped is a tool.
Again, I'm not a flooring contractor. My experience is based on office and retail spaces, not industrial slabs. If you're doing a concrete grind or a full restoration, ask the contractor who's responsible for the warranty. A good vendor will tell you when their product isn't right, too. That honesty is worth more than a product that claims to do everything.
